Kez is ship's cook on a stolen ship crewed by pirates. The pirates are on the run from the corrupt Ascendancy government, and they've just picked up two new passengers: 'unicorn' people, aliens also fleeing for their lives.
Between towering trees and deadly desert, Kez and xir crewmates explore the dangers and wonders of a new, unexplored planet. Kez finds xirself embroiled in an unwitting rivalry over the lovely alien Seely, even as the crew struggles to find a water source. But water and sex might be the least of their worries...
